Custom Cabinets vs RTA Cabinets: What's the Real Difference?
Custom cabinets are designed and built to your exact measurements, layout and finish, while RTA (ready-to-assemble) cabinets are factory-standard boxes shipped flat-packed for you or your installer to assemble on site. ZoneIdeal manufactures fully custom kitchen, wardrobe and whole-house cabinetry: plywood carcasses, Blum hardware and 88 international styles, built to spec instead of picked from a fixed-size box.

What "Custom" and "RTA" Actually Mean
The two terms describe two different starting points: one begins with your building, the other begins with a factory box. Everything else, from price to installation day, follows from that.
Custom / made-to-measure
Cabinet widths, depths, filler panels, door fronts and internal storage are engineered from your room dimensions and your habits. Odd corners, chimney breasts, sloped ceilings and non-standard appliance gaps are designed around rather than blocked off.
RTA / ready-to-assemble
You choose from a catalogue of standard box sizes and assemble them yourself with cam locks and screws. Fast and predictable, but the layout is limited by which sizes the catalogue happens to offer, and a run rarely reaches a wall without filler strips.
Semi-custom
A middle path: standard boxes with a choice of fronts, colours and a few dimensional tweaks. It closes part of the fit gap, but the internal layout and the carcass material usually stay fixed.
Side-by-Side Comparison
If you are deciding between the two for a renovation, these are the differences that show up in the finished kitchen:
| Dimension | Custom cabinetry | RTA cabinetry |
|---|---|---|
| Fit to the room | Built to your millimetre-level layout, including uneven walls and awkward corners | Limited to catalogue sizes, with filler strips for the gaps |
| Design freedom | Door style, panel shape, colour, finish, internal storage and hardware are all specified | Chosen from the available ranges and standard options |
| Assembly and installation | Delivered ready to position and fix; ZoneIdeal pre-installs a coding system that lifts installation efficiency by 40% and saves installers 1–2 days on site | Assembled on site from flat packs before installation begins |
| Carcass and hardware | Specified per project, for example plywood carcasses with Blum hardware | Set by the manufacturer's standard specification |
| Handling of site surprises | Site deviations are laser-scanned during design and absorbed by adjustable filler pieces engineered into the cabinetry | Managed on site by cutting and packing, which is where most damage happens |
| After-sales | ZoneIdeal provides a 5-year quality warranty covering structure, hardware and finishes for custom cabinetry | Depends on the retailer; assembly errors are usually the buyer's responsibility |
| Best suited to | Whole-home renovations, villas, apartments with irregular layouts, trade and project work | Rental refreshes, tight budgets and standard rectangular rooms |
Where Each Option Makes Sense
RTA is not a poor product; it is a different trade-off. If the room is a simple rectangle, the budget is fixed and the cabinets will be replaced within a few years, RTA can be entirely rational. The calculation changes as soon as the space is irregular, the appliances are non-standard, or the cabinetry is expected to last a decade. That is where a made-to-measure run pays for itself: fewer compromises at the walls, no wasted corner, and internal storage that matches what you actually store.
How ZoneIdeal Builds Custom
ZoneIdeal is a custom cabinetry manufacturer based in Hangzhou, China, established in 2015 and operating a 5,000 m² factory. Custom work here means a defined process rather than a one-off favour:
- 2D and 3D design before production, so you approve the layout, proportions and finish in a rendering rather than in your imagination.
- ENF-grade or E0-grade boards. ENF panels are capped at 0.025 mg/m³ and E0 at 0.050 mg/m³ — both inside the international safety baseline and well below the E1 limit of 0.124 mg/m³. Coatings are water-based and zero-VOC, and PUR hot-melt laser edge-banding seals every exposed panel core.
- Factory CNC cut-outs. Socket, LED and appliance openings are routed on our production line after technical briefings with your contractor, electrician and HVAC team, instead of being hand-cut on site.
- Eight inspection stages from raw panel to packing, with every panel individually labelled and barcoded for 100% traceability.

Every photograph in this article comes from a ZoneIdeal project or production line — the cabinetry a customer actually receives, not a stock rendering.
The practical rule: compare RTA and custom on installed cost, not on box price. A custom run adds design and production steps, but it removes filler strips, site cutting, assembly hours and the risk of a layout that never quite closes.
Common Questions
Are custom cabinets always more expensive than RTA?
Per box, usually yes. Installed, the gap narrows considerably: RTA still needs assembly labour, filler pieces and site adjustments, and those hours are billable. ZoneIdeal works to keep custom accessible through scaled production and supply-chain optimisation rather than treating it as a niche privilege.
How long does custom production take?
Production runs are scheduled after the drawings and finishes are signed off, and total lead time depends on project scale, destination and shipping method. Send us your layout or drawings and we will confirm a timeline for your specific project on our contact page.
Can custom cabinetry ship internationally?
Yes. ZoneIdeal serves clients in 72 countries and arranges sea freight, including consolidated loading for multi-room projects. See the services overview for how design, production and delivery are managed end to end.
Tell us about the room you actually have
Custom or RTA is decided by your space, not by a catalogue. Send us your room dimensions, drawings, or just photos and a rough idea of the layout — ZoneIdeal's design team will come back with an executable solution, a 3D preview and a clear quotation, and if a flat-pack run genuinely suits your project better, we will tell you that too.
